Towaiq Mountains

Mount Tuwaiq is one of the most important geographical landmarks in the Arabian Peninsula and one of the most prominent topographical features visible from outer space. It is the heart of the historic Al Yamamah region and of the Najd region. The name Tuwaiq is a diminutive of the word "tawq" (collar), and using diminutives to make names sound pleasing was an old Arab custom. Tuwaiq is one of the oldest landmarks in Najd, known to the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula for a very long time. International archaeological excavations under way today, supervised by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, reach deep into prehistory, revealing many exciting details about ancient human migrations and confirming the existence of ancient villages along the Tuwaiq Mountains.
