Historic Jeddah
Historic Jeddah, known locally as Jeddah Al Balad, lies in the centre of the city of Jeddah. According to some sources its history goes back to pre-Islamic times, and the turning point in its history came in the reign of the Rightly Guided Caliph Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), who made it the port of Makkah in 26 AH. Historic Jeddah has a number of archaeological and heritage landmarks and buildings, such as the remains of the wall of Jeddah and its historic quarters: Harat Al Mazlum, Harat Al Sham, Harat Al Yaman and Harat Al Bahr. It also has a number of historic mosques, the most notable being Uthman ibn Affan Mosque, Al Shafi'i Mosque, Al Basha Mosque, Okash Mosque, Al Mi'mar Mosque and Al Hanafi Mosque, as well as historic markets. On 21 June 2014 it was inscribed on the World Heritage List. In June 2018 King Salman bin Abdulaziz ordered the creation of a department called the Historic Jeddah Project Department, linked to the Ministry of Culture and with an independent budget, based on a proposal by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
