Al
Al-Waba Crater (locally known as Maqla Tamiyah) is a deep circular pit in the ground with a diameter of 3 kilometres and a depth of 380 metres, the largest of its kind in the Middle East. It lies 254 km from the city of Taif. The middle of the crater is covered by a white layer of salt, believed to form because rainwater collects at the bottom of the crater, creating a small shallow lake that does not seep into the ground. It was named Maqla Tamiyah after Mount Tamiyah, which has the same shape, and so the volcanic crater was given the name Maqla Tamiyah.
