Mount Uhud
Mount Uhud is one of the most famous historical mountains for Muslims, rising majestically over Madinah from the north, about seven kilometres long and 2 to 3 kilometres wide, and reaching a height of 350 metres. The mountain gained its great standing because it witnessed the famous Battle of Uhud in the third year of the Hijra, one of the most important battles in the Prophet's biography after Badr, in which the Muslims led by the Prophet (peace be upon him) fought the army of Quraysh at its foot. Seventy Companions were martyred in it, foremost among them Hamza ibn Abdulmuttalib, the uncle of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Master of Martyrs. In a noble hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) said of this mountain: "Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it." That is one of the Prophetic sayings that highlight its special standing. Today the mountain is one of the most prominent destinations for visitors to Madinah who want to learn the story of the battle and visit the nearby martyrs' cemetery.
