Al
Al Baqi Cemetery (Baqi Al Gharqad) is the most famous cemetery in the Islamic world and has been the main burial ground of the people of Madinah since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the present day. It is named after the gharqad trees that once grew there. A large number of Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) are buried in it, most notably Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), the Mothers of the Believers, the Prophet's (peace be upon him) aunts and daughters, and his uncle Al Abbas ibn Abdulmuttalib, as well as thousands of the Tabi'un, scholars and righteous people through successive ages. It is narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to visit Al Baqi and pray for forgiveness for its people, saying: "Peace be upon you, abode of believing people; and we, God willing, will join you." Al Baqi is distinguished by its simple character, free of ornament, following the Prophetic Sunnah of levelling graves. It lies next to the Prophet's Mosque on its south-eastern side, and visitors are allowed to visit it at set times.
