Palace of Islamic Civilisations in Al Namas
The Palace of Islamic Civilisations lies in the village of Al Maqar in Al Namas governorate, 170 km north of Abha in south-western Saudi Arabia. It is considered a wonder of the twenty-first century, shaped by a heritage-minded engineering vision in a purely Saudi mould. At the entrance to Al Namas it brings to mind the Alhambra in Granada, which dates to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Al Maqar draws on the story of a civilisation carved out by Mohammed Al Maqar Al Shahri, owner of the heritage village, which took more than 35 years and used more than two million natural stones from the Asir mountains, at a cost of over 80 million Saudi riyals, as a testament to the skill of this historical heritage. Mohammed Al Maqar Al Shahri, who struggled in his schooling as a child and repeated the first year of primary school seven times, never imagined that he would spend the rest of his life building and constructing. Before that he made journeys to every part of the world, gaining the experience and knowledge that would be the spark for his project.
