Jurash Archaeological City in Ahad Rufaidah
The Jurash archaeological site lies in Ahad Rufaidah governorate, 15 km south of Khamis Mushait, in the Asir region of south-western Saudi Arabia. The site has the remains of huge buildings, some of stone and others of mud, and finds dating from the pre-Islamic period and the successive Islamic periods up to the eleventh century CE. There is evidence of settlement during the Abbasid period in the north and centre of the site, while in the south there is evidence of settlement during the middle and late Islamic periods. Jurash lies on the Hajj road coming from Yemen and was famous for its leather and military industries, including the catapult, the ballista and what were known as dababat (siege engines). Jurash was also known in the time of the Prophetic mission as an important trading centre, and the people of Jurash embraced Islam during the time of the Prophet Muhammad.
