Al Rahma Mosque
The first mosque in the world built over the sea. It welcomes pilgrims and Umrah performers who come to visit it and is considered one of the most important landmarks in Jeddah; in 2009 the mosque received 20,000 visitors from among pilgrims and Umrah performers of many nationalities. The mosque is a wonderful blend of modern and old architecture and Islamic art, built with the latest technology and equipment and with advanced sound and lighting systems. It has 52 external domes surrounding the mosque, in addition to the large main dome with eight bases in the middle, and 23 external canopies. It is embroidered inside and out with Quranic verses written in several different scripts such as naskh, ruq'ah and diwani. The edges of the main dome hold stained glass that lets light, the rays of the sun, into the mosque through 56 windows around the dome, which is designed in the Islamic style. There are also arabesques and Islamic carvings on the walls and windows, and a wooden women's prayer gallery, suspended and raised in the last third of the mosque, which holds about 500 worshippers. The mosque also has service facilities, with areas set aside for ablution and toilets and comfortable, fully equipped prayer halls.
