Jabal al
Jabal al-Lawz is a mountain in north-western Saudi Arabia, near the Jordanian border in the Tabuk region, about 200 km north-west of the city of Tabuk. It rises 2,549 metres above sea level and is one of the highest mountain ranges in the Hisma region, whose mountains are an extension of the Sarawat Mountains from west of Tabuk to Wadi Rum in Jordan. It is called Jabal al-Lawz (Almond Mountain) because almond trees once grew there. The area has rock art dating back to about 10,000 BC, as well as ancient inscriptions and Islamic writings. The area flourished commercially because of its distinctive geographic location and took part in the development of civilisation during a particular period, the Nabataean period of the first and second centuries BC and possibly after, which supports evidence of ancient Arab settlement in the area. Snow also falls on the mountain at times in winter, and sometimes in spring when a low-pressure system arrives.
