Old Souq in Al Wajh
The Old Souq in Al Wajh governorate, known in the past as "Al Manakha", is one of the main landmarks of the historic Al Balad district. It once had a gate controlling entry and exit. The souq was a centre of trade: Bedouin brought livestock, ghee, honey and firewood, while merchants supplied rice, wheat, fabrics, coffee, cardamom and sugar. It was linked to Al Wajh port, from which sailing ships set out for Red Sea ports. The souq is overlooked by the Souq Castle (the town castle), which stands on a high hill and dates to 1276 AH (1859 CE). It was built to protect the town and to oversee the port and the souq.
