Al Atawilah Heritage Village
Al Atawilah Heritage Village is notable for its high position and its fine views over the Taif-Al Baha regional road and the surrounding areas in every direction. It is roughly 33 km from the city of Al Baha, the regional capital and seat of the emirate. Al Atawilah is generally the largest town in Al Qara Governorate and is the seat of government offices. The village has the Rubu Quraysh Souq, which was held every Thursday and later moved to Wednesday. The souq helped to confirm the village's historical standing: people from the surrounding villages would come to buy, sell and trade in a market governed by inherited laws and customs that acted as covenants regulating trade and dealings between people in the region. Al Atawilah was also distinguished by two defensive forts linked to the village wall, Al Uthman Fort and Dimas Fort. These are buildings of unique stone design with several storeys. In the middle of the village stands the mosque, which still survives today with its unique water systems that were used for ablution.
