Bakhroush bin Allas Castle
Bakhroush bin Allas Al Qurashi Al Zahrani (1170-1230 AH) was a horseman of the Zahran tribe in the Hijaz and a commander of the First Saudi State. After several battles he was killed and beheaded by the invading Ottoman armies led by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Egypt. His castle is one of the most important landmarks of the Kingdom's ancient history, as it tells stories of wars and historical events. It is officially known as the "Bakhroush bin Allas Fortress Village" and lies about 5 km north of Al Atawilah and 37 km from the city of Al Baha. The village has several circular forts, designed specifically to reduce the effects of artillery shells. The most notable is Bakhroush Fort, which is distinguished by its large area and its round towers, although part of it has collapsed. The walls were built of tightly packed volcanic stones of varying sizes and colours and coated on the inside with a thick layer of clay, while the roofs were built from tree trunks and branches and then covered with clay. The village also has four mass graves southeast of the castle, for Turkish soldiers who fell in the Battle of Wadi Quraysh in 1229 AH.
