Al Asfar Lake, Al
Al Asfar Lake lies in Al Umran, east of Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. It is the largest body of water in the Gulf region and the only one of its kind in the Kingdom that supports complete wildlife. It was formerly called Hajar Lake. The lake is very important: it absorbs excess water from heavy rains and protects the area from swamps through open drains. It is also a livelihood for local people and a source of grasses used as fodder for livestock, small fish, and plants used in manufacturing such as rushes. In addition, it has been a natural habitat for many resident and migratory animals and birds, and Al Asfar Lake in the Al-Ahsa oasis is the only lake in the Kingdom that supports complete wildlife. In February 2019 the Saudi Ministry of Environment announced that the lake would be turned into a nature reserve, with the aim of preparing it for inclusion on the World Heritage List.
