Aja Mountains
Aja and Salma, or the Tayyi mountains, are the signature landmark of the Hail region. The Aja range lies to the northwest of the city and the Salma range to the southeast. Aja is the larger of the two, and the Al Butayn plain separates them. The mountains get their names from an ancient legend. Aja was a man from one of the Amalek tribes that lived in that part of the Arabian Peninsula, and Salma was a girl he loved, who loved him to the point of madness, but their families refused to let them marry because of certain tribal customs. One day Salma ran away with Aja, together with her maid Al Awja. Their people pursued them and caught them between the mountains of Aja and Salma, where they killed them and crucified them, Aja on the western mountain and Salma on the eastern one, and the mountains have borne their names ever since.
