Marid Castle
Marid Castle is a historic military fortress in Dumat Al-Jandal in the Al-Jouf region, about 50 km from Sakaka. It dates to the 1st century AD, and its oldest mention is from the 3rd century AD, when Queen Zenobia (240 - 274) invaded Dumat Al-Jandal and Tayma but could not storm the castle, and said: "Marid has rebelled, and Al-Ablaq is mighty." The castle stands on a hill about 620 m above sea level and overlooks the city of Dumat Al-Jandal in Al-Jouf from the west. This helped make it a strong stronghold, since someone looking out from the castle can see every part of the town and spot anyone approaching from far away. Marid Castle was given its name because it rebelled against, and resisted, anyone who tried to storm it, as Yaqut al-Hamawi mentions.
