Al
Al-Dir' Quarter is a ruined neighbourhood in the middle of Dumat Al-Jandal, in the archaeological area next to Omar ibn Al-Khattab Mosque, in Al-Jouf Governorate in the north of Saudi Arabia. The quarter consists of adjoining stone houses with interconnected alleys, some covered by arches. The alleys were paved with stone in 1413 AH. Some houses have two storeys and are roofed with tamarisk wood and palm fronds. Moving around the site is dangerous because most of the houses are on the verge of collapse. Al-Dir' is one of the surviving remains of the old city of Dumat Al-Jandal, which escaped the demolition that hit the Dumat Al-Jandal souq. The quarter dates to the medieval Islamic period, but it stands on archaeological layers and foundations dating to the middle of the first millennium BC. It is distinguished by its stone arches, stone buildings and alleys, and by its setting among orchards and water channels that supplied the residents with water from nearby springs. It also stands on the ruins of earlier quarters, as the multiple layers and the old road of the quarter appearing beneath the present buildings make clear.
