Bir Al
Bir Al-Khatim is one of Madinah's most important wells, about 38 metres west of Quba Mosque. It was formerly known as "Bir Aris", after a man called Aris, and became famous as "Bir Al-Khatim" (the Ring Well) after the Prophet's ring (peace be upon him) fell into it. Two famous stories are linked to the well. In the first, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat on its wall with his legs dangling into it, and Abu Bakr, then Omar, then Uthman, may Allah be pleased with them, came to him in turn and he gave each of them glad tidings of Paradise. In the second, Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, was wearing the Prophet's ring, which the caliphs inherited one after another, and while he was at the well it slipped from his hand into it and could not be found despite searching. Given its historical standing, the well today receives attention under the project to develop and rehabilitate historic Islamic sites.
