Battle of the Trench Site
The Battle of the Confederates (the Trench) is one of the most famous battles in the Prophet's biography. It took place in Shawwal of the fifth year after the Hijra, when the armies of Quraysh, Ghatafan and their allied tribes, about ten thousand fighters in all, marched on Madinah to destroy the Muslims. The Companion Salman the Persian, may Allah be pleased with him, advised the Prophet (peace be upon him) to dig a trench around the city; he liked the idea and went with his senior Companions to mark out the digging site. He (peace be upon him) chose the area north-west of the city, known as the lower part of Madinah, because it was salty, marshy ground with few trees, while the other sides of the city were naturally protected by lava fields and dense farms. God Almighty said: "O you who believe, remember the favour of Allah upon you when armies came to you, and We sent upon them a wind and armies you did not see." God turned back the plot of the Confederates with a violent wind that shook their camp, and they withdrew in failure without fighting.
