Hejaz Railway Museum
The Hejaz Railway station was built on 90,000 square metres in a distinctive late Islamic architectural style, with 12 buildings serving the railway. It opened in 1326 AH (1908 CE) as one of the main railway stations and the line's terminus, built in the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, so that pilgrims from the Levant, Asia and Anatolia could travel from Damascus to Madinah in 5 days instead of 40. The railway suffered intermittent stoppages during the First World War until it stopped for good in 1921. Inside the station walls stands Al Suqya Mosque, named for its closeness to the Suqya well, from which the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution on his way to the Battle of Badr. The museum was founded in 1419 AH (1998 CE) and opened by Prince Abdulmajeed bin Abdulaziz, may God have mercy on him. It is located in King Abdulaziz Square in Al Anbariyah on Omar ibn Al Khattab Street, about 1,020 metres from the Prophet's Mosque.
